1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Storysea ("we," "us") collects, uses, and shares information when you use www.storysea.io and the Storysea app experience (the "Service").

2. Information we collect
2.1 Account and profile
When you create an account or update your profile, we may collect:
- Email address and password (password handled by our auth provider; we do not see your raw password)
- Date of birth (to enforce the 14+ age rule and mature-content settings)
- Username and display name
- Avatar, bio, profile color, and similar profile details
- Signup details you choose, such as gender, why you are joining (intent), and genre tastes
- Preferences you choose (for example mature-content settings if you are 18+, theme and reading settings)
Your profile page is public. Some sections (for example private stories or characters) stay limited to what you choose to share.
2.2 Content you create
We store the content you submit so the Service can work, including:
- Stories, chapters, covers, and inline images
- Characters and related fields
- Thoughts and replies
- Direct messages
- Roleplay messages and chat settings
- Collections, likes, bookmarks, and reading progress
- Reports you send about character replies or bugs
2.3 Usage and device information
We may collect:
- How you use the Service (for example pages viewed, reading progress, discovery impressions, likes, blocks)
- Technical information such as IP address, browser type, device/OS, and approximate activity times
- Cookies and similar technologies needed for login, security, preferences, and basic site operation
- Optional analytics about how the site is used, only if you consent (see our Cookie Policy)
2.4 Information from other services
If you join Discord or other external communities linked from Storysea, those services handle your data under their own policies. We do not control Discord.
GIF search may send your search queries to our GIF provider so results can be shown in Thoughts and messages.
3. How we use information
We use information to:
- Create and manage your account
- Provide reading, writing, social, discovery, and roleplay features
- Enforce age and mature-content rules
- Keep the Service secure and prevent abuse
- Understand how the Service is used and improve reliability
- Respond to your requests (including account deletion)
- Communicate important Service updates when needed
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not use your content to train our own AI models.
We do not use private stories for AI features.
4. AI features and processors
Some features send limited data to third-party services so the product can run:
- Hosting, database, auth, and file storage: currently Supabase and Vercel
- AI roleplay and related story processing needed for chat: third-party AI providers that offer open-source models (reached via a gateway such as OpenRouter). Providers may change.
- Recommendations and similarity: optional embedding providers so explore and taste-based features can work
- GIFs: Klipy
- Community links: Discord (separate from Storysea)
These providers process data only as needed to provide the feature. We do not allow those providers to train on your prompts or outputs and to publish those prompts.
5. Legal bases (where GDPR applies)
If you are in the European Economic Area or UK, we typically rely on:
- Contract: to provide the Service you signed up for
- Legitimate interests: security, basic product reliability
- Consent: where we ask for it (for example optional analytics)
- Legal obligation: when the law requires us to keep or disclose information
6. Sharing
We share information with:
- Service providers listed in section 4, under contracts or terms that limit how they use the data
- Other users, when you post public content or message them
- Authorities, if required by law or to protect safety and rights
We do not share personal information with third parties for their own marketing.
7. International transfers
Storysea is based around Barcelona, Spain. Providers may process data in the EU and in other countries. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards offered by those providers.
8. Retention
We keep information as long as your account is active and as needed to operate the Service.
- If you delete messages or content in the product, we treat it as deleted for the Service. Copies may remain briefly in backups.
- If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete it (see section 10).
- We do not publish one retention schedule for every data type during alpha beyond what the product already does (for example, trashed story images may be purged after a waiting period).
9. Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for essential site operation (login, security, and preferences). Optional analytics run only if you consent. That analytics tooling does not set a cookie on your device.
Details are in our Cookie Policy. You can block cookies in your browser, but parts of the Service may stop working (especially login).
10. Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal data, or to object to certain processing.
During this alpha:
- Access or correct: email hello@storysea.io and we will help where we can.
- Account deletion: email hello@storysea.io. We will delete your account on request.
- Export: full self-serve export is not available yet. Contact us and we will help where we can. Broader export is planned later.
You must be at least 14 to create an account. We do not knowingly allow accounts for children under 14. If you believe a child under 14 has an account, contact us and we will remove it.
11. Security
We use technical and organizational measures appropriate for a service of this kind. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure.
12. Children
The Service is for users aged 14 and older. Mature content is limited to users aged 18 and older who opt in.
13. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy. We will post the new version here and update the "Last Updated" date. For significant changes, we may also email you or show an in-product notice when that is practical.
